Rockpool Bar and Grill is a two hat fine dining restaurant by Neil Perry situated in the Crown Casino complex that is known for its high quality steak and seafood. We were quite disappointed when the three hat Rockpool est 1989 closed earlier this year, but were delighted that we had the opportunity to come here for our anniversary earlier this year, looking forward to a great dining experience.
The restaurant has an open kitchen, which always makes for a great ambiance as you get to watch the chefs weaving their magic as you enjoy your meal, and we were given a seat by the Yarra River so also had a lovely water view. We started off by ordering our drinks, this was a feat in itself as they had the most extensive wine menu that I had ever seen! We finally ended up deciding on the rose and lychee cocktail and a glass of pinot, red wine always goes well with steak!
For our entree, we went with their signature seafood dish from the Cold Bar, the Four Raw Tastes of the Sea. This included a selection of their finest sashimi, with kingfish, salmon, tuna and prawn ceviche. The pieces of fish melted in your mouth and was perfectly paired with herbs and spices.
For our mains, we couldn’t look past ordering their steak from the wood fired grill. We went with the cape grim dry aged 36 month old grass fed beef rib eye on the bone 350g and fillet 250g as well as the “Mac and Cheese” and Boiled Mixed Green Veggies with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Lemon. We also go our choice of condiments to go with the steak, including mustard, barbecue sauce and harissa.
The steak definitely lived up to its reputation, it was cooked medium rare just the way we like it and there was a perfect amount of marble. Both cuts were so tender and delicious, though we barely managed to finish it off, 350g is a lot of meat to have in one meal! The Mac and Cheese was also amazing, it was warm and rich, with the right amount of cheese and we attempted to balance this carb fest out with the side of veggies, which were healthy and nutritious.
Finally, we ordered the Chocolate and Hazelnut Mille Feuille with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. This was such a delicate and intricate dessert, the rich chocolate and hazelnut was complemented by the sweet ice cream and the crispy pastry.
It was the perfect end to celebrating our anniversary and an amazing dining experience! Definitely recommend this restaurant for all meat lovers.
