Rockpool Bar and Grill is a two hat fine dining restaurant in the Sydney CBD. Having been to the Rockpool in Melbourne, we loved it so much that we decided to go to the one in Sydney to celebrate my dad’s birthday. The restaurant is located in a grand building with wide entrance and high marbled ceilings and walls, making for a terrific ambiance.
We were shown to our tables by our waitress who then explained to us the menu and what their most popular dishes were. Having been to the Good Food and Wine show earlier that day, we had already drank a lot of wine and opted out of ordering any alcoholic drinks and went straight into ordering food which was a pity because their wine list is extensive and definitely worth trying.
We were served fresh sourdough bread and butter to go with the entree that we ordered, the Big Eye Tuna Tartare, Moroccan Eggplant, Cumin Mayonnaise and Harissa. This was a delicious tartare and the perfect starter, the tuna was fresh and light, with the cumin mayo and harissa adding spice and a great kick to the dish.
We were then served our mains, and you can’t come to Rockpool without ordering their steaks so we ordered two steaks to share between the three of us. The first steak was the 200g Cape Grim Dry Aged 36 Month old grass fed fillet. This was delicious, the fillet was so tender and juicy and was perfectly accompanied by the condiments we were served; a selection of sauces including bearnaise, horseradish and mustard.
Being dad’s birthday, we decided to splash out a little and order the David Blackmore’s dry aged grass fed wagyu sirloin 350g. At $130, it certainly did not come cheap but, we had high expectations for this steak and it certainly met them! This was among one of the best wagyu steaks I had, the MBS 9+ marbling meant that the meat literally melted in my mouth.
Both steaks were so rich, so we decided to balance them out with the Salad of Wood Fire Grilled Vegetables and Goat’s Curd that we ordered. This was a slightly disappointing salad, the serving was not very large and the grilled vegetables only included cauliflower, brussel sprouts and onions, and we expected there to be more of a variety.
Finally, we ordered dessert, we got the hazelnut praline mousse with chocolate and biscuit layers with candied nuts and hazelnut ice cream. This was such a delicious and beautifully presented dish, the layers of mousse was intricate, strong in hazelnut flavour and perfectly complemented by the rich chocolate. The ice cream was sweet and refreshing and went well with the crunchy candied nuts.
The Rockpool staff also kindly gave my dad a Devil’s food cupcake with mascarpone cream to celebrate his birthday, which was a nice touch. It came with a candle and it was delicious, the cupcake was rich in chocolate flavour with the light mascarpone cream icing on top to balance it out.
Overall, Rockpool Bar and Grill Sydney is a great fine dining restaurant famous for their steak and wine. We would definitely recommend it for lovers of meat and seafood alike, their menu was one of the most extensive I had ever seen for a two hat restaurant so there is definitely plenty of choice!
