Hardware Societe is probably the most famous cafe in Melbourne and epitomises the brunch scene. Though it is located on a small lane in the CBD (Hardware Lane), you will not miss the place, there are pretty much permanent lines of people queuing to dine at the cafe. We visited on a weekday morning so luckily did not have to wait for long before we were seated.
We ordered three coffees to start off with, the matcha maiden green tea latte, cappuccino and the latte. These were great, the matcha flavour was strong for a green tea latte and the caffeine and milk mix was just right for the other two to keep it creamy while letting the coffee flavour shine through.
We then ordered three dishes to share, the first dish was the Fried french toast brioche with vanilla yoghurt, strawberries, lychees and blueberry jel. This was a great french toast, the vanilla yoghurt and lychee was sweet and perfectly contrasted by the sour berries.
We also ordered their famous baked eggs and because it was truffle season, we decided to be a bit decadent and add some shaved truffle on top. We chose the baked eggs variation Deux with chorizo sausage, potato, piquillo peppers, queso mahon, toasted almonds and aioli. The eggs were baked well and the chorizo sausage added a great meaty flavour to the dish with the truffle aroma still coming out strong and elevating the dish.
We also ordered the Herb roasted field mushrooms, parsnip and parmesan puree, grain bread and poached eggs. The mushroom were thick and juicy and went well with the strong parmesan puree and the poached eggs, We added truffle as well, which pulled together the dish nicely.
Overall, we had high expectations for Hardware Societe and they did not disappoint, a must visit for anyone visiting Melbourne!
