Gelato Messina is probably the most famous ice cream parlour in Australia, known for high quality and delicious ice cream as well as their decadent weekly specials. I have been to the Fitzroy Messina countless times (often for a sneaky snack after brunch) and this post will go through my last three orders from this store.
We ordered their Tiramisu smash cake for a friend’s birthday, where the gelato combines fresh eggs, mascarpone and marsala. This is encompassed by a white and dark chocolate coffee bowl with layers of Tiramisu gelato and lady finger biscuit, finished with Italian coffee meringue dusted with cocoa. The reason it is called the smash is because it’s designed to be placed on a chopping board, smashed to bits, then placed in a bowl and mixed together. This is exactly how we served the ice cream and it was delicious, so rich and full of chocolate and coffee flavour, with the biscuit adding a nice crunch.
On my other occasions I ordered a scoop of a special, the cookies and cream gelato with peanut butter chunks. This was incredibly rich, one thing I love about Messina is that they have generous chunks of toppings in their ice cream rather than just the flavour and colour built into it. The peanut butter added great nutty flavour to the oreo chunks and vanilla gelato. The waffle cone was solid and crunchy.
The other occasion I ordered two scoops of their classic salted caramel and white chocolate chip ice cream as well as a nutella special with brownie chunks. The two flavours were also very decadent, with the slightly salty salted caramel and lighter white chocolate chunks balancing out the rich nutella flavour nicely.
Overall, Gelato Messina is a must visit for ice cream lovers everywhere and their specials make it worth going back on a weekly basis (if your diet can afford the cheat days!). Their ice cream cakes are also spectacular and worth ordering for your next special occasion.
