Flying Egg is a new cafe situated near St Leonards train station. The interior of the cafe is large and spacious and it is perfect for many occasions, a morning coffee and baked treat, a quick and healthy weekday lunch or a lazy indulgent weekend brunch. We came here for the latter on a Saturday and will share our experience.
To start off with, we ordered the Belgian hot chocolate with mint and the green tea milkshake with pure matcha gelato. The coffee is from The Grounds, so you can be sure that it is high quality. The Belgian hot chocolate was very rich and indulgent with strong and refreshing mint flavour, however we found it a little too sweet. The green tea milkshake was delicious, the matcha flavour was mild and went perfectly with the creamy ice cream and milk.
We then ordered a savoury and a sweet dish to share. We started with the french toast; brioche loaf soaked in egg wash and rolled almond and coconut powder with seasonal berries, lemon maple syrup, vanilla gelato with a chocolate cookie crumb. I really loved the crispy brioche and the tartness of the seasonal berries was nicely balanced by the creamy ice cream and lemon maple syrup.
Next we ordered the Bohemian salad with salmon; roasted winter vegetables, zucchini, capsicum, eggplant, spiced almonds, chickpeas, slow cooked cherry tomatoes, rocket, beetroot hummus and pomegranate dressing. This was such a delicious and nutritious salad, the salmon was fresh and tender and I loved all the fresh vegetables and spices, with the sweet pomegranate dressing pulling it together nicely.
Overall, Flying Egg is a cosy cafe in St Leonards that serves up delicious food with high quality ingredients. The dishes are beautifully presented and cooked well, would definitely recommend a visit!
