Mary Miller is newly opened cafe in Fitzroy North. It’s owned by the experienced Sarge Michael from Chesire Café and The Glass Den and Marie Macheras and the result is a lovely cafe with inventive and high quality dishes and a lovely ambiance. We came here for brunch on a weekend, keen to try out their menu.
They have a range of exotic latte flavours on the menu and we could not decide what to order so we settled on the Latte tasting platter with matcha mint, berry beetroot and tumeric chai. I love the matcha mint and berry beetroot flavours, the refreshing mint went well with the matcha and the sweetness of the berry nicely offset the beetroot flavour. The tumeric chai was a little strong for me. All three mixes have great health benefits and I would definitely order the full size when I return next time.
We then ordered three dishes to share. The first dish was the Zucchini and haloumi fritters with bacon, smashed avocado, tomato relish, poached egg, feta, rocket salad and corn salsa. I love fritters and this was a great dish, the zucchini and haloumi was nicely flavoured and went perfectly with the fatty bacon and creamy avocado, while the tomato relish, salsa and feta made for a diverse taste.
We also ordered the Wagyu beef burger with wagyu patty, fresh cos lettuce, short cut bacon, caramelised onion, jalapeno pickles, melted swiss cheese, tomato relish and house aioli and a side of hand cut chips. The bun was served red, to reflect the spicy jalapeno inside, which added a great kick to the burger. The wagyu patty was so tender and juicy and the onion was perfectly caramelised.
Lastly, we finished off with the French toast with brioche loaf, canadian maple syrup, vanilla mascarpone, house made rhubarb jam, strawberry, kiwi fruit, toasted almonds and pistachios. The french toast was nice and crunchy and had a strong cinnamon flavour which I love and the vanilla mascarpone was light and creamy and perfectly contrasted by the tartness of the jam and seasonal fruit, while the nuts added a good crunch.
Overall, Mary Miller Cafe is a great new addition to the Fitzroy North brunch scene, with a range of interesting menu options including vegetarian dishes and a great drinks and coffee menu. It is fast making a name for itself and its not hard to see why, definitely recommend trying out for a delicious breakfast or lunch!
