Nostimo Cafe: A gem of a cafe in Malabar

Nostimo is a local Malabar cafe, famous for its delicious and healthy food with a Lebanese inspired twist. The cafe is proudly family run and owned and I had heard great things about it so decided to drop by on a weekend for a brunch.

To start off we tried a selection of their special coffees including the tumeric, carrot and matcha latte. These all have great health benefits and were delicious too, my favourite was the matcha was lovely and creamy with a slight bitter taste.

We also ordered their Pitaya dragonfruit smoothie with coconut milk. This was another great drink that I had never tried before, it’s not often you see dragonfruit as an ingredient in a smoothie but this was delicious and the coconut milk added a nice tropical flavour.

We then tried two of their super breakfast smoothie bowls. These were beautifully presented the first was the acai bowl with amazon berries, strawberries, banana, granola and coconut flakes. I love a good acai bowl and this is one of my go to pick me up brunch dishes, there is just so much goodness in a bowl.

The second bowl we tried was the Ocean break with banana, papaya, pineapple, mango, coconut, coconut milk and coconut water. I loved the refreshing taste, the flavours combined perfectly to create a smoothie bowl that made me wish I was sipping it while on vacation.

We then ordered some mains to share. The first was their Mediterranean special with beetroot hummus, lime yoghurt, heirloom tomato, haloumi, dukkah, poached eggs on toasted sourdough. This was one of the best vegetarian brunch dishes I have tried in recent times, I loved the haloumi, which went perfectly with the hummus and dukkah, while the lime yoghurt gave a great citrusy flavour.

We also ordered the Eggs benedict stack with two poached eggs, bacon, tomato, mushrooms, baby spinach and avocado topped with hollandaise sauce. This is such a classic brunch dish that Nostimo nailed, the toppings were generous and well cooked and the flavours combined nicely with a creamy hollandaise sauce.

Next we ordered their Smashed avocado with snow pea tendrils, feta, heirloom tomatoes, mixed seeds and herb oil. This was another great vegetarian option and with a generous serving of smashed avo, you can not go wrong with this simple and healthy dish.

Finally, we ordered the pancakes with strawberries, blueberries, melon, kiwifruit, honey and whipped ricotta. I loved the fresh fruits which balanced out the honey and the whipped ricotta was so creamy and light!

Because we had a sweet tooth, we couldn’t resist trying a dessert platter with a selection of their freshly baked treats including the paleo bounty with almond dates, sunflower seeds, coconut honey dark chocolate, passionfruit slice with almond, coconut and butter milk passionfruit, lemon tart and polenta gluten free chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. Never before have I had such healthy and tasty desserts. My favourite was the passionfruit slice, it was so creamy and citrusy and the tartness of the passionfruit balanced out the sweetness of the slice.

Overall, Nostimo is a great Malabar cafe with lovely ambiance and service. They have an extensive menu with typical breakfast dishes as well as lunch options like burgers and fish and chips and the food is freshly made and healthy. Would go back for their smoothie bowls, definitely recommend this for anyone in the area!
