Penta is probably one of the most insta famous cafes on the brunch scene, it is always so busy and when we went at 1pm on a weekend it was no different, Located in Elsternwick, it is by the same team behind Tinker, Mob and Bentwood and serves an extensive menu of brunch and lunch dishes and drinks.
To start off, we ordered the Espresso martini and salted caramel malt milkshake. It is never too early to start drinking and the espresso martini was done very well by a cafe, and definitely work me up. The milkshake had great salted caramel flavour too and was not too sweet.
Firstly we ordered the Nutella pannacotta with a nut butter banana sushi, honey joy crumb, strawberries, pomegranate molasses and marshmallows. This is their signature dish and definitely should be shared, the panna cotta was so rich, nicely contrasted by the tartness of the strawberries! I also really enjoyed the nut butter banana sushi, it was delicious and creative
Next we ordered the Penta benedict with braised beef cheek, watercress, poached eggs and jalapeño hollandaise on sweet potato waffles. I loved the tender braised beef, which was cooked and marinated perfectly and the sweet potato waffles were a great touch as well while the jalapeno added a punch.
Finally we ordered the Grilled Shawarma chicken on a warm grain salad with faro, red quinoa, sorghum, cranberries, pomegranate, feta, herbs, spinach, pepitas and sumac labne. This was a nice and healthy salad, I really enjoyed the tender chicken as well as the exotic ingredients in the salad, the cranberries added a nice sweetness and the labne was also a great touch.
Overall, Penta is a must visit for any brunch lover, the dishes were creative and well cooked and sure to please. The panna cotta is a must try!
