Short Straw is a cafe located in Hawthorn, an area known for its cafes. It does a range of great brunch and lunch dishes so we checked it out one weekend.
To start off we ordered the Matcha latte and Peanut butter smoothie with banana, peanut butter, chocolate, almond milk, honey and cinnamon. The matcha latte was nice and authentic, it had a good combination of sweet and bitter flavour while the smoothie was one of my favourite ones I have tried so far, the peanut butter was rich and creamy and the honey and cinnamon added good flavour.
Next we ordered three dishes to share, the first was their signature, the Saffron and caramelised banana waffles injected with wild strawberry coulis topped with lemon curd, whipped cream and chocolate macarons. You cant come to Short Straw and not try this delicious and gorgeous dish, the chocolate macarons were a creative touch and the whipped cream was light and nicely contrasted by the strawberry coulis.
Next we ordered the Poke Bowl with multigrain rice, cured sesame seed salmon, sweetcorn, soybeans, avocado, wakam and ponzu dressing. The salmon here was simply delicious, perfectly cured and full of flavour and it was so nutritious as well, definitely the perfect summer dish!
Finally we tried the The Short Straw, the dish named after the cafe, which consisted of the sweetcorn and zucchini fritters with sliced avocado, tomato chilli chutney and whipped goats cheese. I found the fritters to be a little dry but I did enjoy the tomato chutney and the whipped goats cheese.
Overall, Short Straw is a creative cafe that does a great range of brunch and lunch food and drinks. Definitely pop by if you are in the area and try their waffles, you wont regret it!
