Paddock on Crown is a cafe in Surry Hills that serves a unique breakfast and lunch menu. It has a courtyard area that is perfect for winter brunches soaking up the sun as well as an indoor area. We had heard good things about this place and have been here on two occasions.
For our drinks we ordered the Freshly made strawberry lemonade and Acai mango frappe. The strawberry lemonade was so fresh and zesty, I loved how it was house made. The acai mango frappe was slightly lighter than a smoothie, with lots of fresh fruit.
We ordered three dishes to share. The first was the Fluffy pancakes with vanilla mascarpone, raspberry coulis, whipped maple butter and fresh fruit with ube ice cream. This is their signature dish and it’s not hard to see why, the pancakes were some of the fluffiest I have ever tried and the marscapone was nice and creamy, while the fresh fruit balanced out the maple syrup and the ube ice cream had good flavour.
Our second dish was the Firebox beef brisket burger with coleslaw, signature bbq sauce, mac cheese and fries on a brioche bun. I loved this burger, the beef brisket was so tender and juicy while the coleslaw had a nice crunch and the chips were baked perfectly. The addition of the mac and cheese made for a rich and decadent feed.
Lastly, we ordered the Squid ink risotto with prawns, squid, mussels and parmesan cheese. At $22.5, it is priced so cheaply for what you get, there is a generous serving of seafood and the risotto had amazing flavour, definitely one of my favourites ever. The lemon added a touch of zest that I enjoyed.
For the second visit we tried out their new winter menu. In addition to the signature fluffy pancakes, I ordered the Black sticky rice with coconut tapioca, lady finger banana, passionfruit and ube ice cream. I loved this asian elements in this dish, the coconut flavours were strong and the passionfruit added a tart flavour that cut through the sweet ube ice cream.
Next we ordered the Gnocchi lamb ragu with basil, passata, lemon mint ricotta and pecorino. I loved this dish too , the gnocchi is homemade and the lamb is well cooked and seasoned with fresh herbs, with a delicious rich sauce, the perfect winter warmer.
Lastly, we ordered their Roast pumpkin and beetroot salad with beans, bell peppers, pomi, fetta, fried tofu and pesto. This was so healthy and delicious too, the ingredients were all fresh and the pesto added a nice flavour. I also loved the crunchy the tofu was.
Overall, Paddock is a great cafe in Surry Hills, they do a range of unique dishes that are cooked well, the service is friendly and there is a lovely ambiance so be sure to check them out if you are ever in the area!
