Luyu and Yum Yum is an Asian fusion restaurant in Newtown known for their cute and specialty dumplings and cocktails. We had heard good things about this place so came here for dinner one night with the girls. When we arrived, we were told they did not have any of the cute dumplings which was a disappointment.
Instead we ordered the Green Lantern Dumpling with Zucchini, Asparagus, Celery, Shiitake Mushroom & King Oyster Mushroom, Steamed in Flour Dough. I enjoyed this, the mushrooms meant that it was a delicious vegetarian dumpling, which I normally do not like.
Next we ordered the Truffle Dumpling Skewer with Chicken, Prawn, Ginger, Shallot & Truffle in Flour Dough Pan Seared. This was probably my favourite, the chicken and prawn combined together well, though I did not taste a lot of truffle.
Next we tried the Flying Seafood Dumpling Scallop with Fish-ball, Prawn, Asparagus & Flying Fish Roe in Rice Dough Steamed. This was a good seafood dumpling, the flavours came together well.
Lastly, we tried the Snow white dumpling with Prawn, Asparagus, Bamboo shoot & Luyu Home-made Creamy Soup in Chrysanthemum infused Potato Starch Dough. I liked the crunchy bamboo shoot in this, though I felt the dumpling dough could have been thinner.
Overall, I felt the dumplings were overpriced at $10 for 4, you could usually get 8 dumplings at that price at other restaurants.
We also ordered some other dishes, the other entree was the Duck pancakes with hoisin sauce, cucumber and spring onion. I enjoyed this dish, the duck was nice and tender though I felt like there could have been a more generous serving.
Next we tried the Fried rice with Duck, Egg, Asparagus, Shallot, Coriander, Baby Corn & Mustard Seeds Stir Fried. This was a decent fried rice but I felt there was too much shallot and could have done with more duck.
Next we ordered the Moringa vegetables with Moringa Tea, Asparagus, Celery, Baby Corn, Broccoli & Carrot Stir Fried. This was a nice healthy dish that went together well, there was a good variety of vegetables.
Finally, we ordered the Egg noodles with King Prawn, King Oyster Mushroom, Chives, Baby Corn & Carrot. I enjoyed this dish the best, the egg noodles were well cooked and the toppings were delicious.
Overall, Lulu and Yum Yum was a decent Asian restaurant with good Chinese dishes at above average prices. Would recommend if you are going here for the ambiance, the restaurant is quite funky, however the prices reflect this and the food is nothing extraordinary.
